Project “Prevention of violence through experiential learning about gender equality and constructive family relationships”

In September, KCM started implementing the project “Preventing Violence through Experiential Learning on Gender Equality and Constructive Family Relations,” with the support of the United States Embassy in people-2557396_960_720Belgrade. The aim of the project is to reduce the rates of violence in intimate partnerships in the long term and to permanently change violent behaviors through the implementation of non-formal educational programs.

As a first activity under the Project, in November, a roundtable “Youth Education as a Method of Preventing Partnership Violence” will be held as the first of two meetings to be held within the project dedicated to the conception, development, and methodology of non-formal youth education programs.

At the roundtable, representatives of the academic community, representatives of civil society organizations and members of the UG Crisis Center for Men (KCM) will discuss the concept of violence prevention through non-formal education, successful models and methodologies, as well as topics relevant to youth violence prevention.

 KCM will present a non-formal education program that provides future professionals with the latest knowledge and contemporary approaches necessary to better understand the phenomenology and underlying causes of violence. The program covers topics such as child development, parenting, gender equality, intimate partnership, development of empathetic response (mentalization) and others.

The learning and teaching process rests on experiential pedagogy according to Kolb’s concept of the learning cycle. The structure of the program will be available in the form of a two-day seminar for university teachers and in the form of a semester-long course for students.

The educational program is planned to have 5 modules:

Introductory Module 0 will be structured to introduce students to the topics. Since, at this early stage, the teacher will introduce regular consultations to assist students in their individual work.

The first module will introduce the main concepts underlying the topics that underlie the meaning and what are the principles of nonviolence and gender equality while recognizing the complexity of their interpretation and application. In addition, the module will facilitate relationships and cohesion between students.

The second module guides students through a discussion of personal and shared values ​​that they lead through exploring personal values ​​in relation to the values ​​of other group members, experiencing constructive and destructive dynamics within groups. At the end of this module, participants should understand what values ​​are and how they shape one’s behavior or actions.

In module three, students would relate the concepts discussed in the first two modules to personal and shared values and would continue to explore their relationships while acknowledging the challenges of their application in a complex environment. In this module, students will have exchanges with professionals dealing with violence issues by exploring examples of complex realistic situations with ethical dilemmas that guide professionals in making decisions for the benefit of people in need.

The fourth module will explore ideas and discuss opportunities for actively engaging students to implement the value of nonviolence in their community. The module will provide information on project management and media relations and will allow students to jointly explore the areas in which they may contribute, make a joint decision about their project and formulate it.

Students will manage projects individually or within local organizations through the implementation and documentation of their contributions to the implementation of what they have learned about non-violent and gender equality in their community during the fifth module.
